Listen to the Album
Each of the songs on “A Yankee Clipper In Congo Square” is built around a historic recording. The recordings were chosen for their unique personality and for the extent to which they captured a particular time & place in American musical culture. They were each edited, reconfigured, and surrounded with samples created by WalkWest designed to call to mind specific styles of American music. Several of the source recordings were then combined with other historical recordings, and all were tracked with additional live musicians.

As my son would say, “this album is dope!” Congered up standing in the middle of the grounds of the NOLA Jazz Fest and spinning like a top mixing the sounds of the Gospel Tent, Jazz Cruise, Congo Sq. Stage, Fais Do-Do Stage, Blues Tent as well as the rock ‘n roll of the bars in the Quarter as if on a merry-go-round. My ear kept getting tricked as it latched onto a groove and then morphed into a new key, a modern rhythm, from warm to hot to cool sounds. Quite an ethnographic and audio feat! E. Olson
What a pleasure to experience this slice of Americana. It covers so much American musical history embedded within a contemporary setting.
Quite a unique idea that respects the great early artists and showcases them in an enjoyable package.
JB – Thank you for taking a listen. It means a great deal to me. It was one of my chief goals thoughout to treat these source recordings, these great artists with the respect they deserve, and to cast them in a light that they would not have foreseen, but laid the groundwork for. Thank you for your kind words. Steve
